Snowmobile-assisted ski touring days in Kilpisjärvi
The pearl of Finnish freeriding!
Kilpisjärvi is the northern pearl of Finnish freeriding, a unique combination of wilderness calm, rugged fell scenery and the freedom of ski touring. Kilpisjärvi is at its best in late winter and spring, when the days get longer, the sun starts to shine and fresh snow may still fall. The long daylight allows for several ascents and descents.
On these snowmobile-assisted ski touring days, the Arctic wilderness and limitless skiing opportunities come together. Since there are few good descents in the immediate vicinity of Kilpisjärvi, a snowmobile or several take us deeper into the fells, to places that would take too long to reach on skis. This way you save your energy for the descents and get the most out of every day.
During four ski days, we head to the area's impressive fells and, if the weather allows, we get to ski down Iso-Malla, conquer Halti, the highest point in Finland, and ski down from there!
It is worth remembering that mountain weather can be unpredictable. The wind can be strong and last for a long time. Visibility can deteriorate quickly in snowfall or when clouds descend as a low-pressure system approaches. Even in April it can still be very cold, and combined with strong wind the weather can feel truly freezing. At its best, the snow can be really soft powder or enjoyable spring snow. On the other hand, wind and hard frost can turn yesterday's spring snow into challenging concrete.
But if bad weather surprises us, we can, for example, ride the snowmobiles to nearby lakes, build a windbreak out of snow and ice fish our own lunch!
This week is designed for active freeride enthusiasts who have a good basic level of fitness and experience skiing in varying snow conditions. Routes are chosen according to the day's weather and snow conditions and the group's skill level.
Accommodation is in double rooms at Lapland Hotels Kilpis. A generous breakfast and sauna are included in the price.
Snowmobile-assisted ski touring days in Kilpisjärvi
Program of the week
During the week we travel to the nearby fells towing behind a snowmobile. The snowmobiles set off from the hotel yard after breakfast. In the morning we conquer one fell, have a trail lunch out in the terrain, and in the afternoon we climb a second fell.
In the evenings, the hotel offers a lakeside sauna with an ice-hole swimming spot, as well as a dinner of Nordic flavours conjured up by the hotel kitchen. We will also explore what the other restaurants in Kilpisjärvi have to offer, according to the group's wishes.
Flights and ground transport
Transport to Kilpisjärvi is not included. There is a bus connection to Kilpisjärvi from Rovaniemi and Kittilä, and transfers from the bus to the hotel will be arranged. In Kilpisjärvi, restaurants and the shop are within walking distance.
Difficulty level
The week is designed for active freeride enthusiasts who have a good basic level of fitness and experience skiing in varying snow conditions.
