Finland and Kilpisjärvi as a Ski Destination
Kilpisjärvi is the northern gem of Finnish freeriding – a unique combination of wilderness tranquility, rugged fell landscapes, and the freedom of ski touring. It sits right at the meeting point of Finland, Sweden, and Norway, where the Scandinavian mountains begin to rise and open up a freeride world of their own.
There are no lifts in Kilpisjärvi, so all ascents are done on foot. The real experience begins when you reach the top of a fell and see the open gullies and snowy slopes stretching down below. In good weather, the views are breathtaking.
Kilpisjärvi is at its best in late winter and spring, when the days grow longer, the sun returns, and fresh snow may still fall. The long, bright days make it possible to enjoy several ascents and descents. However, it’s important to remember that mountain weather can be unpredictable. Winds can be strong and persistent. Visibility may deteriorate quickly in snowfall or when low clouds descend as a low-pressure system approaches. In March, temperatures can still drop very low, and combined with strong winds the conditions can become extremely cold. But if bad weather surprises us, we can, for example, take snowmobiles to nearby lakes, build a snow shelter from the wind, and fish our own lunch.
On Powder Universe trips, small groups, experienced guides, and a calm atmosphere ensure a truly unique freeride experience.
